Mission and Objectives

General League Information

Mountain West Youth Football is an organization whose goal is to provide full-contact, tackle football for children grades 3-6 in Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale, Glenwood Springs, Newcastle, Silt, Rifle, Meeker, Parachute and all areas in between. Youth football is an excellent vehicle to teach children the fundamentals of the game as well as sportsmanship, teamwork, respect and work ethic.

Mountain West Youth Football is a developmental league whose goal is to encourage football participation into the students’ high school years. Our season runs from August through the end of October every fall. All of our teams fall into one of two divisions. Division 1 teams are comprised of 3rd and 4th graders and Division 2 teams consist of 5th and 6th graders. Our teams are coached by volunteer coaches who are usually parents of one or more players. The games are on Saturdays and Sundays and are usually held on the high school football fields of our constituent communities.

Our seasons typically start in mid-to-late August and run through the end of October. Players who are entering 3rd through 6th grade in the fall are eligible to play. The costs are $275 per player with an additional $75 per player for those families with multiple players. Players will receive all gear they need to play with the exception of cleats and socks. Parents have the option of providing their own equipment as long as it meets the safety standards of the league and matches the team's color specifications.

Mountain West Youth Football is proud to announce our affiliation with USA Football. Furthermore, all of our coaches have been trained in and successfully passed a course on concussion avoidance and are subject to a rigorous screening process.

You may sign-up online starting in May by clicking on the Register link on the homepage.  Each town will also be holding registration events at the end of May. At these events a Mountain West Youth Football representative will guide you through the registration process. Check out our Event calendar for dates and times in your area.

We will accept registrations throughout the summer on a first-come-first-served basis, so register as early as possible. Registration cut-off is the day before our first practice. Each team has a maximum of 25 players, so registrations above and beyond that number may not be accepted.

Mountain West Youth Football's mission is to teach the youngsters introductory and fundamental football skills in a fun and nurturing environment while maintaining age-appropriate and educationally/psychologically sound objectives of athletic participation.

Objectives

  • Learn to join others and leave the protection of home and parents.
  • Learn cooperation skills
  • Know and learn about teams
  • Begin to learn what function each participant performs in a team setting
  • Learn how they can contribute to a team
  • Learn to compete
  • While realizing the winning is important, emphasize participating and trying rather than winning over losing
  • Emphasize progress in learning skills
  • Try to cultivate the desire to play more than one sport
  • Learn appropriate techniques and methods of tackle football, including ability to tackle and block correctly.
  • Learn a variety of offensive skills, including positions in the interior line as well as ‘skill’ positions of center, quarterback, receiver, and running back with the understanding that not every player can learn and/or play every positions due limitations created by time, numbers of participants, and coaching and not every player is going to be able to play the position he/she wants to play due to limitations created by numbers of participants and the constraints and nature of the game of football itself.
